Increasingly employers are using social networks to find out more information about job applicants, but it may not be for the reasons that you think – sometimes employers may just be looking to see whether a page exists at all.
Employers have been known to use social networks to find out more information about job applicants, but now some psychologists suggest that people who don't have a social media profile might be sending off warning signs of their own.
It is a huge leap to make, but German magazine Der Tagespiegel made this conclusion due to the fact that accused The Dark Knight Rises theatre shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik shared one common trait – neither of them had a Facebook profile page.
However, other analysts suggest that there is more at play than simply a lack of Facebook profile. Psychologists are looking for social links between people – both real and online. A common trait many violent people share is that they may be anti-social or have few friends.
So the real red flag might not be a missing social media profile, but the lack of a friend network altogether. But isn't it interesting to see how our measurements of sociability have changed?
Not that long ago, you might judge a person based on their real, local social circle, but now, it appears that people – especially younger people – might also be judged on their online connections too.
